Highway 1 - Best Driving in the World.

According to Wikipedia
State Route 1 (SR 1), often called Highway 1, is a state highway that runs along much of the Pacific coast of the U.S. state of California. It is famous for running by some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, leading to its designation as an All-American Road.
I have driven that route about 5 times now and people keep asking me what my fascination with this beautiful road is. Well, besides it being a great driver's road, it is also astonishingly beautiful. You seriously can get a 'beauty overdose' if you're not careful. Today I had to drive from Santa Monica to Monterey in 1 day (about 7 hours), so there was not a lot of time to really stop and enjoy the scenes. Below is an impression.

The day started with some serious ironing. My clothes looked like rags.

Soon I realized I forgot to pee before leaving. During my 'pit stop' I made a friend.

Ready to go! It was rather cold by the way (15C!) so I had bought a jacket/sweater. The cold is not making me look very happy.

It is the cold. That is just why I look grumpy... :)

You have to get why I like this road now, right?

I had lunch in Big Sur (I love that 'town') so I could try if my new toy (iPad 64GB) would work in the sun. Surprisingly it does. I like Apple I'm afraid...

Shortly before Monterey you have a town called Carmel. Next to Carmel is Pebble Beach (from the famous golf club) where you can take a scenic 17-mile drive. Basically you drive around the golf club and past the houses of the rich. It is their driveway, so to speak. This time I was surprised that about one-third (!) of the houses were up for sale. So, if anybody wants to live on a golf club with some of the most stunning scenery: www.17mileliving.com

Not a bad setting

At about 7:30PM I arrived at my hotel. Tomorrow I have an even longer drive, since due to the bad weather in CA the last week the road through Yosemite is closed, meaning I have to take a 300 mile detour. A pity, since I was planning on lunch with Ariana (Beil) but there is no way I can manage that now. Better luck next time. My detour does take me through the Sequoia Forest, so hopefully some scenic drives and stunning views.
